Atacama Tours Chile San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
A person floating motionless on their back in dense turquoise brine ringed with white salt

Can you swim in the Atacama Desert?

Quick answer

Yes. There are brine lagoons dense enough to float in, thermal hot springs at Puritama, and a geothermal pool at El Tatio. Each has its own rules, and the most-booked one comes with a restriction most listings do not mention.

It surprises people that the driest desert on Earth has swimming in it at all, but the water is here — it simply arrives as brine from beneath a salt flat, or hot from underground, rather than as rain. The Atacama receives about 38 mm of rainfall a year according to the Chilean station record, and none of the water you can get into came from any of it.

The salt lagoons

The Cejar complex on the northern edge of the Salar de Atacama holds brine concentrated enough that you float on the surface without effort, in the same way as the Dead Sea. The catch: Laguna Cejar itself is now protected for contemplation only, and the bathing happens at Laguna Piedra within the same complex. Tours are still sold under the Cejar name. You will float; it will be next door.

The rules at the lagoons

No sunscreen immediately before entering, because it contaminates the brine — apply it at least an hour beforehand. Showers afterwards run about thirty seconds with no soap or shampoo. Roughly half an hour in the water is what you get, and it is enough, because the water is cold and the salt stings.

Baltinache

The Lagunas Escondidas de Baltinache are seven hidden lagoons further out, sold as their own half-day. Fewer people and a longer drive, same floating, same rules.

The hot springs

Termas de Puritama is a series of eight thermal pools linked by wooden walkways in a canyon about 30 km from San Pedro, fed by mineral-rich hot water. It is the only warm water in this list and the entrance is charged separately from any tour.

El Tatio

There is a bathing pool at the geyser field fed by the hot springs. It is at 4,320 m and the air around it is −10 to −5 °C at the hour the tours arrive. Getting in is pleasant; getting out is a decision. Bring a swimsuit under your clothes and a towel you do not mind losing to the dust.

Where you cannot swim

Laguna Chaxa and the altiplanic lagoons are flamingo habitat and are entirely off limits — you stay on the marked paths and leaving them is prohibited rather than discouraged.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim in Laguna Cejar?

Not in Cejar itself, which is protected for contemplation. The floating happens at Laguna Piedra in the same complex, and tours still carry the Cejar name.

Why is sunscreen banned before swimming?

It contaminates the brine. Apply it at least an hour beforehand rather than at the water's edge.

Is the water warm?

The salt lagoons are cold. Puritama's thermal pools are warm, and so is the geothermal pool at El Tatio — though the air around that one is well below freezing.
