Why it has to be that early
The fumaroles vent all day, but the steam only condenses into visible columns when the air is cold enough. That window is roughly sunrise to an hour after it. Leaving town at 5 a.m. is not the operator being difficult; it is a ninety-minute drive to reach a field that stops performing once the sun is properly up.
What the altitude does
4,320 m is high enough that a meaningful share of visitors feel it — headache, breathlessness, nausea. The operator's own advice is to take lower-altitude tours first and acclimatise, which is unusual honesty for a listing and is exactly right. Do not make this your first full day.
How cold, precisely
The operator states −10 to −5 °C at the geysers, in every season. San Pedro that same afternoon will be in the twenties. Dress in layers with a t-shirt underneath, because you will shed most of them by 10 a.m.
