The fees nobody puts in the headline
This is the part that catches people. CONAF publishes Valle de la Luna at CLP 10,800 general and CLP 5,400 reduced, and Lagunas Miscanti and Miñiques at CLP 8,000 for a foreign adult. El Tatio has no authoritative published figure we could find — operators consistently quote CLP 15,000 per adult, cash, though older sources say 10,000. Piedras Rojas and the Cejar complex charge separately again, by the communities that administer them. Budget CLP 30,000 to 50,000 across a three-day trip on top of the tours.
Why they are charged that way
These are not the operator's fees to include. Valle de la Luna is co-administered by CONAF and the Atacameño communities; El Tatio, Piedras Rojas and the lagoons are charged by the communities whose land they are on. The cash problem
Everything outside San Pedro is cash only, in Chilean pesos. The ATMs in town run out, particularly in January and February, and there is nowhere to draw money on any of the excursion routes. Draw what you need for the week in Calama on the way in, or on your first morning.
Booking online against booking in town
The agencies on Caracoles will book you for tomorrow, and outside the peak months that is often a little cheaper than an online price. In January, February and July it is not, and the operators with the deepest review records fill first. Two things have hard deadlines regardless of where you book: Valle de la Luna tickets must be bought at least a day ahead online, and the Cejar admission closes twelve hours before departure.
What a package saves
The three-day combination at $389 covers four excursions that would cost roughly $230 booked separately, so it is not a discount. What you are buying is the sequencing — the high-altitude day placed last — and for a lot of visitors that is worth more than the difference.
